Volcano hike in Iceland to the eruption site in Litli Hrútur / Merardalir / Geldingadalir
Volcano hike in Iceland to the New eruption site in Litli Hrútur, Merardalir & Fagradalsfall Iceland
UPDATE 13/11 2023 - There is a volcano in Iceland that is expected to erupt within a few hours/days.
We at Activities Iceland are waiting anxiously to see what happens. The volcano is on the Reykjanes peninsula, near the capital Reykjavik. Watching a volcanic eruption is a magical and dramatic experience. If there will be a volcanic eruption, and if it will be a harmless lava eruption, Activities Iceland will offer both helicopter tours and hiking tours to view the volcanic eruption. Stay updated on the page.
Update 5/8 2023 - The volcano is dormant again. No activity for now! However, it has not officially stopped (it can start again any time.) The tour is still offered, as you can see the volcano, new lava / crater and smoke. It is dramatic sightseeing.
On July 10th, 2023, a new volcanic eruption began in Iceland. After a few days of increasing earthquakes at the mountain Litli Hrútur on the Reykjanes peninsula, near the capital Reykjavik, an almost magical and dramatic volcanic eruption started again.
There is a great demand for these tours, and it is therefore important to contact us as soon as possible if interested.
The tour might be slightly different, with stops on the way and may include less or more walking distance. We have the right to change the itinerary depending on the situation of the eruption.
This is the first volcanic eruption on Reykjanes peninsula in 800 years. The eruption started 19th of March 2021, then stopped in December 2022. The volcano is now activie igen. It is a impressive lava eruption, peaceful and beautiful. The area is only around 30km (18,6mi) from the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. You can even see the red sky glowing over the eruption from Reykjavik. Reykjanes peninsula is a very volcanic active area and the eruption in Geldingadalir / Merardalir has been expected for a long time as it has had many earthquakes there lately, and that is often the start of a volcano eruption. This is an extremely interesting eruption to view and has attracted tourist, photographs, and geologists from all over the world.
We offer a great hiking tour to the volcano site with a guidance. The tour starts with a pick-up from either your hotel in Reykjavik or nearby bus stop. We drive to Reykjanes Penisula, to the volcano site, and therefrom walk together with the guide to the eruption itself. The hiking tour is demanding ca. 18 km (11mi).
This tour is a once in lifetime experience in Iceland.
- Mossy-covered lava fields
- Fagradalsfjall Volcano
